Hughes signs with Tigers/Storm for 2019

MapSports Tom Hughes has signed on with the East Tigers in the ISP Super Cup competition for the 2019 season. Hughes who spent the 2016 / 2018 seasons with the Newcastle Knights will team up with the Tigers and immerse himself in the November preseason before joinging the prestigious Melbourne Storm for a 5 week period in January.

Hughes, who stands 189cm and weighs 99kg is a powerful outside back who bases his game around work ethic and graft, regularly averages over 150m per game on between 15-20 carries. It is however his aerial capabilities that sets him apart from other outside backs with a tremendous leaping ability that, when capitalised on, can be a major weapon for a team. Hughes currently has scored 39 tries in 53 games since joinging the Knights halfway through the 2016 season.

When we spoke to Hughes he was obviously keen to get to Brisbane to meet his new teammates in preperation for the upcoming preseason, "It's all happened quite quickly really. We were looking at several offers in the QCup and were close to making a decision and we heard back from Easts and with the incentive of travelling to the Melbourne Storm to work with their staff was too big an opportunity to pass up."

Tigers coaching staff were shocked when they managed to secure Hughes mentioning, "We honestly thought he would have been taken. He is a big, strong outside back with speed and good fundamentals. We pushed the Storm to obtain the addiditional preseason as we beleive Tom is that caliber and if he does return back to the Tigers after preseason, we will be the beneficiaries. Tom seems a great kid and we are looking forward to having him on board."
